The first ever stationery many of us owned as a child was a notebook.
Notebooks hold our memories and invoke familiar feelings for anyone.

We have been handling paper products for over 80 years and our starting point was “sketchbooks for school” in which children drew their dreams.

Since then, we have been observing the “relationship between people and paper” in our daily lives and produced stationery and office supplies to be used as a means of self-expression.

We are always keeping pace with customers’ changing needs against the backdrop of the changing times and technical innovation. And now, we are at the position where we can produce products using secondary and tertiary raw materials.

Our products include over 350 kinds of stationery and office products such as notebooks, binders, loose-leafs and file folders and over 300 kinds of art supplies such as canvases, sketchbooks, and artist’s bags. Partnership with Windsor & Newton, UK in 1976 enabled us to provide even more quality art supplies backed by their 150 year history. Maruman’s research subject is “the rational ways of binding paper”.
Based on the research, we have pushed technological innovation and made many contributions to the stationery industry.

We were the first to manufacture spiral notebooks using German-made equipment in 1960.Our use of plastic as a material for binding rings instead of mainstream metal was groundbreaking and because plastic ring binder was far superior to metallic binder, it was epoch-making in the industry.

We then pursued functionality and design of the cover for added value to the products. We introduced vivid colors such as red, blue and green instead of subtle colors standard in notebooks for the purpose of information classification. Maruman has consistently created products that are one step ahead of everyone and for this, the notebook received the Good Design award administered by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. We strive to create products that carry the Maruman spirit and this aspiration bore technical innovations.

Stationery goes through specialization depending on its intended use. That is why Maruman puts great emphasis on the spirit of craftsmanship.

Nowadays, almost all our products are mass produced by machinery, but the final touch and subtlety that cannot be achieved by machines are dependent on skilled hands.

Notebooks are going through further specialization and their value is growing not only because of their functionality but also because of their looks. This is the time when we can truly make most of our craftsmanship and the spirit cultivated by Maruman tradition.

Insistence on quality is reflected on the selection of materials.

Designing Maruman’s stationery means considering not only the functionality, design and colors but also the sensory components such as weight, thickness and texture.

We only use carefully selected materials. For example, for a notebook, not only do we select quality paper, but we also only use paper board that does not get warped by temperature and humidity, choose spiral wire coated with nylon that is fine but strong, and pay close attention to kind of chemical adhesive used on the cover.

The materials we use are not only domestic but significant amount are imported from European countries.

Maruman’s effort to create products that are comfortable and high quality has not changed since our inception because we want you to be a regular customer.

Versatile production department and streamlined distribution.

Maruman has always put emphasis on production rationalization.

In our affiliated company Miyazaki Maruman Corporation. The manufacturing process of loose-leafs and notebooks are automated in the mass production department.

Also, specialty stationery based Maruman Corporation’s Sagami plant built new equipment to facilitate the rationalization of distribution.

In order to deliver our products in a timely fashion to our customers, the whole manufacturing process is carried out smoothly in one premise with ingenuity such as an automated sensor for the door between storage and the factory floor.

Ingenuity and passion dictates Maruman’s quest for the next research project.

New research project born out of our “binding” research is the development and application of synthetic resins.

We started the application of our research findings in 1965 in order to cut costs and improve convenience.

The outcome was a plastic binder that is one of Maruman’s main products even today.

Our use of synthetic resins has expanded to covers and cases and the demand for it continues to grow.

Since we started the research on resins, we never stopped but continued the study with new subjects within the research. That is because we consider pursuing the best relationship between material and product to be of utmost importance.

Always creating new products. Maruman’s products are born out of every employee’s ideas.

Maruman’s product ideas come from all our employees.

Then the idea is expanded and made into prototype and commercial product by small number of elite member of the product planning department.

Together as a team, the whole company is involved in product development. This is the company stance that continues to pursue dreams in daily life.

Our products are valuable in a wide variety of situations in this information age.

In today’s business, recording and storing information is a key component to the success. We live in an age where offices are automated and various data storage medium are available, yet we cannot sever people from paper. We have designed products with new functions one after another such as desktop calendars, day planners, and a binder that can stand on a desktop with capacity large enough to hold computer manuals.

We can also assist business in creation and exhibition of its originality and help streamline the way it organizes information by manufacturing custom-made binders.

This commitment made us look overseas early on.

We brought in German-made binding machine since our inception, established a US-based affiliate ahead of everyone in the industry in 1968, and gathered information on European craftsmanship and applied them to commercialization of our products. Our forward-looking attitude is the source of Maruman’s success today.
